Profile raising in South Florida: making the most of the Daily Business Review

Daily Business Review Awards

Profile raising is an important aspect of your marketing and business development efforts. Demonstrating that you are a thought leader in your practice area – whether by writing articles or by being quoted in news articles – can help you stand out. There are many publications out there of course, but the focus of this post is the Daily Business Review (DBR) in South Florida.

Writing an article

The DBR is an ALM publication reporting on the legal market in South Florida. he DBR’s Board of Contributors column provides an excellent platform for lawyers to contribute articles. Articles can be about a specific case, a certain area of the law, a trend, legislation affecting a particular field or the business of law. They should be about 800 words. You’ll also need to include a one-sentence bio and a high resolution headshot and will be required to sign the DBR’s standard rights agreement. Contact editor Cathy Wilson at cwilson@alm.com to pitch your article.

Getting quoted in articles

This involves relationship building with reporters over time. Essentially, once you establish yourself as a knowledgeable source, reporters will call you for quotes for stories related to your practice area. DBR reporter Raychel Lean covers litigation (on Twitter @raychellean) and Linda Dinkova covers real estate (on Twitter @LidiaDinkova). As a start, follow them on social media and like or comment on their content as appropriate. Setting up a breakfast or coffee at your office is a great way to meet them in person and introduce them to lawyers at your firm who can speak on particular topics.

If neither of these options sound like a fit for you, there are other ways to raise your profile in South Florida. Speaking at conferences, joining the board of a community organization or getting involved in a professional organization are different ways to achieve the same goal. Do what works for you.
